WRITING GUIDE
Use a word count that fits your writing goal
A word counter helps you check whether a draft fits a brief, form, assignment, article, or social post. It can also show character counts and give a rough reading-time estimate. These numbers are useful guides, not a substitute for reading your work carefully: different publishers and platforms can define counts differently.
How to use the Word Counter
- Paste or type your draft into the text box. The totals update as you edit.
- Check words and characters separately; a platform may set a character limit rather than a word limit.
- Use the sentence and paragraph counts as a quick structure check, especially if a draft feels dense.
- Copy your text or use the clear control when you want to start a new draft. Keep a copy elsewhere if the writing matters.
Tips and common mistakes
Do not assume every website counts contractions, hyphenated terms, numbers, or punctuation exactly the same way. This counter treats sequences of letters and numbers as words and supports common apostrophe forms, but a school, editor or application may use another rule. Reading time is an estimate based on roughly 200 words per minute; a technical document or text intended for careful study may take longer. Empty text correctly shows zero rather than a misleading minute. For final submissions, check the target platform's own counter when available.
How the count works
The tool analyzes the text entered in the box locally. It counts words using letter-and-number groups, counts every character in the text, and calculates a second character total after removing whitespace. Sentence and paragraph totals use punctuation and blank-line patterns as practical heuristics. These are transparent convenience measures, not a linguistic proofreader or grammar checker.
Privacy
Your writing is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to a Kitlune application backend. If you paste private work on a shared computer, remember to clear the text and consider whether the device itself is safe.
Frequently asked questions
Does the counter save my draft?
The tool does not send your text to a Kitlune backend; copy your work elsewhere if you want to keep it.
Why might another counter show a different total?
Tools can use different rules for hyphens, apostrophes, symbols, and numbers.
Is reading time exact?
No. It is a rough estimate and your actual pace depends on the material and reader.
Are spaces included in characters?
The tool displays both total characters and characters without whitespace.
Can it check grammar?
No. It provides counts and basic text statistics, not grammar or factual review.
